The Legend of Amethyst

Bacchus, the god of wine (also known as Dionysus in Roman mythology), had a dispute with Diana, the goddess of the moon (also known as Artemis in Roman mythology), and the resentful god of wine decided to find someone to vent his anger. After a drink, he sent a fierce tiger to take revenge. On the way, the tiger met a beautiful girl named Amethyst. In order to protect the girl from the tiger, Diana turned her into a pure and flawless crystal statue. When the god of wine saw the crystal statue turned into the girl, he was very sad and shed tears of regret. The tears fell on the crystal statue and instantly dyed it purple, resulting in amethyst.

Legend also mentions that because of the origin of amethyst and the god of wine, in ancient Greece and ancient Rome, people who attended banquets would carry crystals with them to avoid drunkenness. People believe that as long as they have a ring or necklace with amethyst, no matter how drunk they drink, they will not show drunkenness. Plinny, a naturalist in ancient Rome, believed that the bright color of amethyst was similar to wine, but it would stop absorbing (the energy of wine) before it was completely integrated to show such a deep color. The name of amethyst also comes from this fictional fact.
